The DTLA Renaissance

April 13, 2015

Thirty years ago, Downtown L.A. was a far cry from what GQ magazine now calls “the coolest new downtown in America”. This area of L.A. was merely a space where people clocked in and clocked out; sidewalks were lifeless, restaurants closed, and the roads were empty at nightfall.

Fast forward to 2015, and DTLA is now one of the trendiest and sought-after places to live. Thanks to the addition of world-class restaurants, bars, and entertainment, people can now live, work, and play in one sprawling epicenter. It’s this resurrection that has transformed it into a place full of life on the weekends and after-work hours — essential components for hard-working metropolitans. Galleries, theaters, and stores like Ralphs and the future Whole Foods have also contributed to new urban life, offering services that are essential for both a cultural and practical dwelling.

While the L.A. skyline is further proof of its insurgence, the backbone behind any thriving city is the community within it. The majority of those migrating to DTLA are young Millennials who are all about balancing work life with play, and spending time in the neighborhoods they reside. In addition to the 431 miles of bike routes the city has installed, there are more cultural events to rally the community together. These include the festival CicLAvia, where typically busy streets are turned into car-free zones, and BlacklistLA, a collective of street-art-loving runners who meet every Monday at 10pm and jog in packs discovering different neighbourhoods.
