The LEVEL Low Down: Best Ice Cream in Vancouver

July 4, 2018

We’re in the midst of a Vancouver heatwave, but hey, we’re not complaining. In fact, we’re using this as an excuse to cool down with cool treats – ice cream, to be more specific. Whether you want to stay close to home, or you’re willing to cross a few bridges, we’ve got the latest scoop on where to get the best ice cream in the city.

One of our favourite ice cream spots in the city also happens to be right in between our two locations. Mister uses liquid nitrogen to create rich, creamy, and dense ice cream, with no stabilizers or fillers. Try their black waffle cone made from coconut ash activated charcoal, or one of their dipped ice cream sandwiches or s’mores bars. One thing’s for sure – you won’t be bored with the selection.

Earnest Ice Cream

If you’ve spent much time in Vancouver, chances are you’ve heard of Earnest Ice Cream. Born in 2012, Earnest Ice Cream makes small batch ice cream, experimenting with seasonal and unique ingredients. Their goal has always been to create ice cream that expresses their passion for flavour and embodies their values. With a commitment to environmental sustainability, Earnest is the first ice cream shop to sell pints in reusable jars – and when you bring yours back, you’ll get $1 off your next pint!

Rain or Shine

Using local, natural, and fresh ingredients, Rain or Shine crafts homemade ice cream at three locations in Vancouver. With staples like malted milk chocolate, and seasonals like Twin Sails Dat Juice Beer, Rain or Shine collaborates with local purveyors to create addicting and unusual flavours. Pro tip: go for Taco Tuesday, where you’ll get a waffle taco filled with two scoops and crunchy toppings.

Creamy, smooth, flavourful, and dairy free? That’s right, Umaluma’s non-dairy gelato is made from a cashew nut butter base combined with coconut milk or hemp-seed milk, with the exception of sorbettos crafted from fruit base. Sourcing ingredients from ethical and fair trade suppliers, Umaluma has created flavours like Sicilian Pistachio, Mahalo Macadamia Chocolate, and Spicy Turtle. Skeptical of non-dairy desserts? We bet you Umaluma will change your mind.
